I bet if obesity were to invite you in this way “Together with our diseases, we invite you to join us on our mission to get you seated in one place and barely make a movement for hours…” I’m sure there wouldn’t be so many cases globally. The statistics from the Medical Research Council of South Africa show that the number of obese people is increasing in SA. Approximately 68% of women and 31% of men in the Western Cape are obese (Western Cape government).

What is obesity

Obesity is when your body mass becomes heavy for your bones to carry. The calculation divides the bodyweight by kilograms against the body height. Calculating using the latter figures helps with identifying the average weight an individual should be when compared to people of the same weight and height (peers).

How is obesity measured?

Example: 75kg / 154cm= 48
Then divide 48 by your height 154cm =31
Body mass rate
BMI
Waist line size
Underweight
<18.5
Depending on height, then /2=
Normal
18.5-29.9
Men: <94-102cm
Women:80cm
Overweight
25-29.9
Men: >94cm
Women: 80-88cm
Obesity
>30.0
Men: >102cm
Women: >88cm Source: https://www.verywellhealth.com

Obesity is hidden in the fast pace life...disguised as quick when actually we deteriorate, we become lazy to do things. No one is even willing to spend 10 minutes while standing in a queue at a grocery store. Yet our small gadgets hold us hostage for hours, every single day. If we were to trade the hours we spend on our small screens for a gym, that will mean that our bodies will get energized and get the required oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. It is said that on average, SA ranks the highest spending time on smartphone usage per day in the Sub- Saharan countries. According to GeoPoll (2020), the only limitation in Mzansi’s smartphone usage is the high cost of Data. WhatsApp has the biggest contributing factor when it comes to blue screen spending time followed by Facebook. The average time spent on smartphones per day is +4 hours, and female users are leading with consumption level. With the said statistics, it proves that people do have spare time in a day, but it is up to an individual to choose where they will spend it.

Is technology to be blamed?

The beauty of technology is that it has improved our lives for the better, almost all the things that were manual have been automated. So many things work remotely, to name but a few, turning the room lights on has an app where you automate switching, connecting electric appliances with Bluetooth, and even closing and opening of curtains and blinds. What we used to sweat for is put in front of us. Recall the days when we used to wind up and press down the television buttons to switch to another channel. Parents will have you switching to 3 different channels in a space of 2 minutes…whoa! you were somewhat moving.

Advanced technology was paired with gadgets and those gargets were loaded with apps that are sure to keep you on the bent neck for hours, without you even noticing it. Not forgetting the privilege brought by these small gadgets, the ability to access entertainment in a scroll, and the easy connection to the outside world, especially during this pandemic era. The best thing that has ever been installed in smartphones was the health tracking applications. The applications are designed to help with kickstarting your journey to fitness and health. These apps help with tracking simple activities such as step counting. Establishing a routine and remaining consistent in doing your workouts can make a huge difference in reducing the chances of becoming obese.

Ironing out the confusion associated with Fat and Wealth

Gone are those days where being big and fat was associated with happiness and wealth, having a big body can be associated with health risks such as diabetes and heart disease. Heavyweight also causes stress to the bones which results in arthritis and back pains. Yes! There is a difference between being underweight, overweight, and obese. To help fight obesity you have to be active every single day for a minimum of 30 minutes, starting by keeping track of the number of steps you take per day. Don’t forget that consistency is the requirement to yield visible results!
